Subnetting Video Series by Ed Harmoush
Learn Subnetting the Right Way
What if there were a single video series that could make you a Subnetting Master?
What if that video series were available for free — for everyone?Wheel, look no further. Here it is.
I’m sharing this material because, honestly, I haven’t found anyone who explains subnetting better than Ed. My goal isn’t to copy or repost other creators’ work, but to guide students toward the best resources when someone explains a topic better than I can. The videos you’ll find on my website are rare exceptions, not the rule — I include them only when they truly add educational value.
Video 1 — Subnetting Basics
This video series will teach you the fundamentals of subnetting. Every subnetting problem asks you to solve one or more of seven key attributes: Network ID, Broadcast IP, First Host IP, Last Host IP, Next Network, Number of IP Addresses, and CIDR/Subnet Mask conversions. This video clearly explains what each attribute means.
Video 2 — The Ultimate Subnetting Cheat Sheet
Learn how to draw the Subnetting Cheat Sheet — only three lines long, yet powerful enough to help you solve subnetting problems in 60 seconds or less. The rest of the series will show you how to use this Cheat Sheet to solve any subnetting problem.
Video 3 — Solving the Seven Attributes
Use the Cheat Sheet to solve for all seven subnetting attributes: Network ID, Broadcast IP, First Host IP, Last Host IP, Number of IP Addresses, Next Network, and CIDR/Subnet Mask conversions. Every subnetting problem you face is simply asking for one or more of these seven attributes — and here you’ll learn to solve them all in under a minute.
Video 4 — Practice Problems
Work through four real-world examples to master the method and the cheat sheet. The first two are straightforward, while the last two demonstrate special cases you might encounter on the job. If you already feel confident with Video 3, make sure to at least watch the last two problems here — they’ll help you avoid confusion in future subnetting tasks.
Video 5 — Speed Tips
Discover four tricks that will help you solve subnetting problems even faster. With these tips — and a little practice — you could be answering subnetting questions in 10 seconds or less!
Video 6 — Subnetting in the Third Octet
Learn how to use the same Cheat Sheet to solve problems in the third octet (/17–/24) with the same speed and accuracy as the fourth octet.
Video 7 — First and Second Octet Subnetting
Extend the Cheat Sheet to cover subnetting in the first and second octets (/1–/8 and /9–/16). Then tie everything back to what you learned in Video 1.
